New U.S. guidelines on screening for cervical cancer
In an article published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine in November 2009, are reported in the American guidelines on screening for cervical cancer. In summary we recommend:
1) does not make the pap test is under 21 years of age, because until this age, the disease is rare, and the presence of reversible disorders often without treatment. Screening under 21 years may lead to inappropriate diagnosis and treatment and essentially useless
2) between 21 years and 29 years, screening is recommended every two years
3) between the age of 30 and 65, screening is recommended every 3 years
§ 4) over 65 years, is not recommended for screening § § § This
in patients who have previously had at least three consecutive Pap tests normal (we exclude women with HIV, with a history of CIN 2-3 and exposure to diethylstilbestrol)
§ § This in patients with at least three consecutive normal Pap tests and no problem in the previous 10 years (we exclude women with multiple sexual partners).
