virgilio Giotti, when Trieste became the language of poetry
Giotti Virgil was born in Trieste on January 15, 1885 by Richard and Emilia Schönbeck Gheotto, hence the name of art. Brought to attend the School of Industrial Design, from which came several generations of painters and sculptors from Trieste. In 1907, in order to avoid military service in Austria, fled to Florence where he met Scipio Slataper, Stuparich brothers, Alberto and Spaini Biagio Marin. At San Felice in Val d'Ema, near Florence, in 1911 Schekotoff meets Nina, a native of Moscow and makes it the partner of his life. In Tuscany, her three children were born: Tanda in 1913, Paul in '15 and France in '19. For travelers living in Valtellina, in Carnia, Switzerland to sell toys and crafts from Tuscany. Start writing in dialect of Trieste in 1909. In Florence the publisher Gonnelli the public in 1914 the Little Trieste dialect songs in the collection of poems composed between 1909 and 1912. Back in Trieste in 1919 and went to live in the suburbs, in Montebello, Via La Marmora 34 (you will remain until the end of his days). In those years, opened a little shop of newspapers in Stari Grad, which will last one year. His friends found him a job at the National League. Meet daily Saba Stuparich, the painter and the young Roberto Bolaffio Bazlen. In 1920 the Library of Ancient and Modern Saba published his poems and prose language, written between 1916 and 1919, under the title My heart and my home. In 1928, for the editions of Solaria out Caprizzi, songs and stories. In 1930 Giotto was hired as casual workers in the administration of the General Hospital and will remain so until his retirement in 1957. In 1931, at the publisher Florentine Parenti, released his fourth film, opera and romances, which collects new poems written in language between 1920 and 1924, and the group of poems Edition Trieste My heart and my home. They go out on a number of other poems in national journals, "Circles," "Opera", "Solaria", "Ateneo Veneto" and in 1941, with the publisher Parenti, leaving the poems composed between 1928 and 1936, with the title Colors. In 1943, for the three Venetian editions, released the complete works of poetry in dialect, composed from 1909 to 1943, for which he holds the title of Colours collection. At the heart of his work lies the drama of death in Russia's two sons, Paul and Franco, during the last war. The story was made even more tragic by the fact that their mother was Russian. In the months leading up to the end, that occurred an intense exchange of letters with his father (also published in 2005 under the title Letters to his father, Virgil dialogue between Giotto and children during the Russian campaign for The Golden Bough Publisher), which remains a high human and civil document, not without a very considerable literary interest, as stressed in the introduction the book containing their letters, Cesare Segre. The father's poems provide us with valuable feedback on his work in verse, in anticipation of those events useless (the diary will be released posthumously in 1959 for The Zibaldone Anita Pittoni), born after the war, which Pasolini define a masterpiece of the twentieth century and Giani Stuparich in short introductory text to those pages he wrote: "I confess to have read the first time these diaries with the tight throat and a strong narrowing of the heart ..." In 1946 two friends Trieste Emilio Dolfi and Manlio Malabotta publish in just over 100 copies Sera, which collects poems written between 1943 and 1946, the work will be reprinted in 1948 by the publisher Turin De Silva. In 1949, in only 25 samples out of business, leaving the Poems for Carlota, composed between June 30 and July 4, 1949. The latest collection of poems, Poems, will be published by The Zibaldone in 1953. In June 1957 the Accademia dei Lincei awarded him the prize "Feltrinelli" for poetry. The collection of all his poems (except for the Poems Carlota), Colors, published by Richards and the poet will barely have time to proofread, will be released posthumously.
Giotti Virgil died in Trieste, September 21, 1957.
